KITS Top 10 for 2010 (part 1 of 2)

Over the last year we’ve seen some big changes in the computing world. From software to hardware, there have been changes in system security, Microsoft launched a new operating system and laptops grow slimmer and sleeker every day. We’d like to share our top favorites in software and hardware, from the last year and this fledgling new one.

Favourite Security tools: Install them. Update them. Run them.
AVG Antivirus: The Free Edition is perfectly adequate for most users get it from free.avg.com
Malwarebytes: The free version of this program complements other spyware tools by removing most of what they can’t. Get it from www.malwarebytes.org

VLC Media Player is our pick for the best video player. It ain’t pretty, but it works & it’s free. It will play most any video file that you can think of, and probably an extra half dozen that you’ve never heard of. Get it from www.videolan.org

Our favorite hardware toy this year has got to be the WD TV HD media player from Western Digital. This little black box plugs into your TV (both Standard & Hi Definition) and allows you to view your pictures, music and video files without having to burn them to DVD first.

One of the most popular uses on a computer today is Instant Messaging: If you have are like us and have more than one IM client, (such as Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo, ICQ, Aim or Google Chat) use Trillian to manage them all at once. One caveat, it doesn’t use a webcam well.

Mozilla takes the crown for both Best Web Browser and Best Email Client: Firefox is faster than IE 7 or 8, tabbed browsing and add-ons galore. Highly customizable, even more so with the new Firefox 3.6.
Since Windows 7 has done away with the old standby of Outlook Express (Windows Mail in Vista), we recommend the e-mail client from Mozilla: Thunderbird. With a similar interface to Outlook Express, it’s very easy and simple to use.

In 2^nd Place: Google Chrome – the most visited website feature can be annoying, but this browser is even more trim than Firefox, though without the amazing wealth of features. Get it from http://www.google.com/chrome
